By creating access to clean water, engineers improve human health and save lives around the world. This lesson really hones in on how important engineering is to our everyday lives as students learn how effective water quality testing affects millions of people. Through the accompanying activity, students do water quality testing (coliform bacteria, turbidity) and learn what is involved in basic water treatment designs. It is wonderful that they understand exactly why harmful bacteria should not be present in our water ---- not just told that it shouldn't be there. And, students apply their own creativity to design and build prototype miniature water treatment facilities, acting as engineers to understand their role in preventing water-borne diseases and illnesses. ...less
