Materials List: Creating Silver Nanoparticles

Each group needs:

  • stereo microscope; if this isn’t available in a chemistry lab, check in with your biology department
  • 3 disposable polystyrene petri dishes with lids, 100 mm x 15mm
  • a piece of copper wire with no insulation, 4 cm (1.5 in) 16-24 gauge in width
  • test tube rack
  • pipette droppers
  • 4 test tubes, 10 mm x 75 mm
  • copy of Student Workbook, one per student
  • permanent black marker
  • deionized (DI) water, at least 1 L per group
  • test tube brush
  • 6 pieces of Glad Press’n Seal® Wrap, 2.5 cm2  (~1 in.2)
  • safety goggles, one set per student

To share with the entire class:

  • refrigerator (for storing the tanning solution)
  • dish soap
  • silver nitrate, 60 ml of 0.2 M solution
  • Pu’erh tea to make 250 ml of tannin solution, 40% concentration tea, available in stores or on Amazon
  • filter paper circles with a medium flow rate, available on Amazon
  • sodium hydroxide, 50 ml of 0.1 M
  • distilled vinegar, 50 ml
