This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land
Students work together to discover the various environmental effects of the landCopyright Microsoft Corporation 1983-2001.
In this activity, students review and evaluate the ways land is covered and used in their local community. They also consider the environmental effects of the different types of land use. Students act as community planning engineers to determine where to place a new structure that will have the least effect on the environment.
When developing a new community, engineers design the growing area, ensuring minimal impact on the existing natural environment. Civil, transportation and architectural engineers concentrate on the safety, design and cost of new buildings, bridges, dams and roads.
After this activity, students should be able to:
- Understand and identify the different ways that land is covered and used.
- Students predict land usage amounts in their community.
- Describe the involvement of engineers in community planning.
