Environment & Environmental Issues

In this unit, students explore how human land use effects the natural and built environments in their community. Just like engineers, students survey community members about various environmental issues and identify different solution options, which they share via a student-created book, newspaper, or other communication product.

To solve environmental issues, engineers must first listen to all viewpoints. Working in multidisciplinary teams, engineers must balance environmental and economic concerns when they solve environmental problems, design new communities, or develop new technologies to clean and protect our natural resources. As they work, engineers carefully document their engineering processes, products, and services. They use this information to communicate decisions and solutions with various audiences and stakeholders, as well as patenting their ideas.
