Audio Engineers: Sound Weavers

Photo shows a room full of equipment, computers and monitors. An audio workstation used to manipulate and enhance sound.

Students are introduced to audio engineers, discovering the type of environment in which they work and exactly what they do on a day-to-day basis. Students come to realize that audio engineers help produce their favorite music and movies by practicing similar techniques to prepare for a recording session as shown in the associated activity.

Audio engineering has a long history intertwined with pop culture, through both music and movies. Audio engineers help musicians, actors and other professionals record music and sounds for entertainment purposes. They design the rooms in which recordings take place as well as the microphones and recording equipment.

After this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Relate audio engineering to music and film.
  • Explain that audio engineers manipulate sound by using their scientific knowledge of sound.
